In 2018, DeSantis was elected Governor of Florida and was re-elected in 2022 by a wide margin. As governor, he has focused on policies related to economic growth, tax relief, education reform, immigration enforcement, hurricane preparedness, and public safety. He gained national attention for his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, opposition to prolonged lockdowns, and high-profile positions on cultural and education issues.
DeSantis became a prominent national Republican figure and launched a campaign for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, emphasizing conservative governance and economic policy. Although he ended his presidential bid before the primaries concluded, he remained an influential voice within the Republican Party.
